ABDUL HAMID IDRIS (more well known as Cikgu Hamid) the owner, studied economics at Universiti Putra and was a teacher before he started his food business back in 2003. Cikgu Hamid uses a family recipe for his nasi ulam that is traditionally Kelantanese.
He has opened a branch known as Restoran Taman Orkid at Jalan Padang Tembak, Pengkalan Chepa in Kota Bharu (dekat sgt ngn umah saya) and it is operated by his wife.
Specialty 1: Nasi ulam, white rice mixed with traditional salads and herbs
White rice eaten with raw vegetables dipped in a spicy sauce or sambal that is garnished with lime, onions, chilli, lemon grass and tempoyak (fermented durian paste) and of course ur kegemaran ..budu , viva la budu..!(beli 30 botol nnti). The customer picks his own raw greens to complement the meal (ulam la ni). Among the vegetables served are those that have been blanched to make them more palatable, for example, the egg plant, segala macam pucuk mucuk sume ade..yg best ade watermelon la...mnyedapkan lagi..
Specialty 2: Ayam goreng, fried chicken
Well-marinated with spices like tumeric and served with the nasi ulam, price per piece depends on size. Fried meats are a great complement to the raw herbal taste of the rice, something like a salad with roast chicken.( xsah kalo x amik ayam goreng ni.haha)
Specialty 3: Ikan keli goreng, fried catfish
Marinated catfish fried to a golden crisp to be served with the nasi ulam, price per piece depends on size. Catfish have a strong riverine taste so deep-frying helps to ameliorate it. Couple with nasi ulam, they make a great dish.(ni lagi sedap..adooii..)
Specialty 4: Ikan patin asam pedas, silver catfish asam curry
Patin fish cooked in asam-flavoured curry to be served with nasi ulam. Asam pedas is a very common curry among the Malays, especially in the northern parts of the peninsula. It is flavoured with, among others, daun kesom, chilli and a bit of belacan.
